The history of Longines

Longines is a Swiss watchmaking company established by Auguste Aggasiz in 1832, together with his two partners, Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. Its founding name was Raiguel Jeune & Cie. Agassiz used his strong business connections in America to help them make the place a large market for their assembled watches. After a few years, Raiguel and Morel left the company leaving Agassiz alone. He took control of the business, however in 1850, he filed his retirement due to poor health.

The company when managed by Ernest Fracncillion

Ernest Francillon replaced Auguste Agassiz and made numerous changes and modernizations. For instance, he produced watches that you can wound through the crown. It was far different from the typical movements with cylinder escapement wounded with keys. As one of his efforts in expanding the business, he decided to purchase the land south of Saint-Imier. He used the place to build another factory he named as les longines or the long meadows. He then hired Jacques David to help him realize his plan to industrialize the company’s timepieces. Jacques became in charge of the improvement of the equipment and mechanical systems of the new factory.

It was in 1867 that the name Raiguel Jeune & turned into Longines. In the same year, a group of delegates from the company headed by David attended the World’s Fair in Philadelphia where they had an in-depth understanding of the American watchmaking industry. When they went home, they immediately applied what they learned in the new factory. One of the notable milestones of the company was in 1880 because it was the year that it became capable of producing in-house movements.

Two of the most notable calibers produced by the brand

The first movement ever produced in the Longines factory was the Calibre 20A. It paved the way for the company to win an award at the Universal Exhibition in Paris. The majority of watch enthusiasts that time loved its anchor escapement and pendant winding and setting mechanism. A year after that, the company released its first chronograph named Calibre 20H. The user can easily activate the Chrono seconds through the use of the mono-pusher crown.

The company participated in sports timing

The involvement of Longines in sports timing started when it produced the caliber 19.73 in 1890. Throughout the years, the company continuously improved its features. By 1838, its engineers manufactured the 24-ligne chronograph movement that was larger and with better accuracy than the products already in the market. Due to its innovative timepieces, it became the official timer of numerous equestrian, horse racing, gymnastic events, and tennis.
