Being a professional gamer and earning a real living out of gaming might seem like a dream to many, but the thousands of successful players in the professional gaming circuit are living proof that it can be a reality. Not everyone can make it in this field, however. It takes outstanding talent, but you also have to be savvy about the industry. Revenue is not always proportional to talent in this industry, either, and resourcefulness will get you a long way. Let’s take a look at how you could start a career in eSports this year.
Choose the Right Game
Maybe you’re a very highly skilled COD or League of Legends player. That’s fine. But know that you’ll be competing against tens of thousands of players from around the world. You also have to know that some countries have such an advantage in certain scenes that it will be almost impossible to break into. Most FIFA professional players are from Europe, for instance, and most League of Legends top teams are from Asia, so go for a game where you’ll have a chance at competing.
One of the things you could do is look at other games that you’re good at and see if there’s a scene there. There are tons of different FPS, fighting, and sports games being played professionally right now. So, see if you could pick a lesser-known game with a sizable community and good tournaments.
Get the Right Setup
The best players have the best gear, and you’ll have to do the same if you want to compete with them. It all starts with your computer.
If you’re looking for gaming laptops, then make sure that it has a stronger CPU than the minimum and a good graphics card. You don’t need to go overboard. Something with an RTX 3000 series card should be more than enough.
Next, come the peripherals. You could play using your laptop’s keyboard, but we suggest you use an external mechanical keyboard as they offer great options and just feel more precise and comfortable. You will also need to get a gaming mouse, but make sure that it’s a wired one as they have better reaction times.
Start Practicing
Now that you have your setup, you will need to start practicing. You can start practicing alone using programs and online courses then try to find training groups in your community. You need to be prepared to play for at least eight hours per day to play at a competitive level, so be ready for that.
Start Looking for Local Tournament
Now comes the time to start being a real eSports player. You will have to look for tournaments in the area where you live or close by. If your eSport is a team game, you will have to look for teams who will be willing to accept you. If you want to know how to get recruited, you can check out recruitment boards like Seek Team. If it’s an individual game tournament, just learn the rules, pay for registration, and make sure that you don’t miss any preliminary rounds.
Becoming an eSports player is pretty simple, it’s being successful that is hard. So always remember that you’ll have to put the work in if you want to reach the echelon.
